Koki Arts is pleased to announce "Memoria! Fantasia.", a solo exhibition by Naoko Matsumoto. This exhibition will showcase "Violet," a body of work dealing with petals. This will be Naoko Matsumoto's first solo exhibition at the gallery.

The works in the "Violet" series were started by painting over the canvas of old work. In the first work, Matsumoto deliberately left blank spaces as she applied white onto the rough linen's surface, and the petals of a violet were painted on the borders of the white and the raw linen. Matsumoto describes the violet in her memory she referred to when painting as "the purple color I saw as a child in a garden somewhere," or "an easy to imagine form of a flower turned upside down, a corolla with two upper petals and three lower petals". Rather than personal memories and an interest in plant taxonomy, she says that she is interested in the experience associated with colors and shapes and the description of the flower itself.

In her recent works, Matsumoto attempts to develop a motif as she paints rather than deciding what to depict from the beginning. The motif can be a movement of the brushstroke, the position of colors within the picture, or the shape of something specific that can be described in words. The combination of linen, the color white, and the petals that are seen in "Violet", has a mutual relationship with Matsumoto's interest in shapes being created and positioned within the picture and is continued throughout the series.
