VAGUE KOBE is honoured to present the exhibition ‘Kongen’ by renowned ceramic artist Naoto Ishii.

This exhibition seeks to delve into the profound concept of ‘kongen’ — meaning ‘root’ or ‘origin’ — a theme Naoto has been exploring for many years. The character for ‘gen (玄)’ in ‘kongen’ is not simply a direct translation of ‘black’ as a definite colour, but instead symbolises an expansive, infinite world, evoking rich hues of colours where light and shadow intermingle.

Naoto Ishii’s works are characterised by the unpredictable chemical reactions known as ‘yohen’, which occur inside the climbing kiln, giving birth to a wide variety of expressions. The ‘gen’ he creates represents not just darkness but a deep, cosmic universe filled with infinite possibilities.

This exhibition also resonates with the concurrent ‘Mizarashi: From the Collection of Shinichiro Yoshida’ at VAGUE KOBE. The unbleached ‘mizarashi’ contrasts with ‘gen’, creating a quiet yet powerful dialogue that underscores the profound depth of materials shaped by time and the forces of nature.
