Natsumi Aoyagi
Natsumi Aoyagi has been expressing herself through video and text in order to capture the invisible while confronting the environment that surrounds her. In recent years, she has been exploring the state of the individual in the contemporary age and how to observe it, for example, by collecting stories and images of others through crowdsourcing.

In this exhibition, Aoyagi's first solo show in six years, she will present a work that resembles a fictional nautical journal, conceived in the wake of the belief in Maso, a goddess of the sea that originated in China and developed through voyages. Although boats are no longer a familiar means of transportation, they were once the only way to travel to distant places and an adventure that risked one's life to reach unexplored lands. They have been the subject of numerous literary works, from nautical narratives to science fiction spaceships. This exhibition presents a video installation that weaves together elements from the East and West concerning ships, including Maso, the goddess of navigation whose beliefs spread throughout East Asia as people traveled by ship, and cocktails that are said to have developed during the Age of Discovery to keep people hydrated and healthy during long voyages. The installation will be presented as if it were a picture book being woven at six locations, including the space, a café, a flower shop, a hot spring, a bar, and a snack bar in Towada.
