The current exhibition illustrates a pathway through the core aspects of resolving existential anxiety: denial, vexation, bargaining, malaise and acceptance. The myth of the siren; mythical creatures, who through their great beauty, allure listless sailors to their fate; is used as an allegory for glamour in this project. The connection between this classical myth and water is symbolic of lifeʼs existential challenges: alienation, the sublime, yet awesome nature of the world; baptism and purification; and the need to expose one's true self to the world in order to be at peace. At the heart of this path to clarity is authenticity: the struggle for congruency between action and belief. Through Mr. Chowʼs photography, Ms. Watanabe plays a protagonist who attempts to return to her simpler roots, having realised the insurmountable challenges of maintaining the glamorous lifestyle. In her effort to regain a sense of self, she faces internal conflict, despair and a desire to mete this out on the viewer. Once accepting that time only proceeds in one direction, our protagonist finds internal peace in an appreciation of the most simple, rewarding and beautiful aspects of the world around us.
