Nissho Kanda × Atsushi Okada "Phantom Horse"

Kanda Nissho Memorial Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Nissho Kanda, Atsushi Okada
This exhibition is a collaborative project, featuring the works of Atsushi Okada (1979- ), a photographer from Hokkaido, in a space lined with paintings by Nissho Kanda (1937-1970), a Western-style painter associated with the town of Shikaoi-cho.

Yururi Island is located off the Nemuro Peninsula in Hokkaido. The descendants of the horses that once supported the lives of the islanders are now living in herds far from human habitation. Okada's photographs of these horses, while capturing lives that will eventually disappear, are imbued with an indescribable air of fantasy.

Nissho also spent the postwar 50s and 60s in Shikaoi working with horses, and died prematurely at the age of 32, leaving behind an unfinished picture of a horse. The horses, which will remain forever in half-length form, will capture the imagination of the viewer and will leave them with a vision of its completion in their hearts.
