Noboru Hama "From Scratch"

Photographers' Gallery
Finished

Artists

Noboru Hama
The exhibition features the work of Noboru Hama, a photographer who documented the marks and scratches on streets in Shinjuku during the 1970s, transitioning from a period of political activism to Japan's consumer-focused 1980s. Hama's photos were later compiled into the book From Scratch. The exhibition features reconstructed prints showcasing Hama's current perspective. It includes previously unpublished photos from the creation of the book From Scratch, capturing scars on various urban surfaces. These scars blend with stains, reflections, and shadows, creating a complex scene, making it hard to pinpoint the exact locations and times from the photos. Nearly 50 years since the photos were taken, both the creators of the scars and the marked objects have likely faded into history. The exhibition aims to encourage contemplation about these enduring scratches, which serve as present-day records of the past.
