Artists

Nobuo Yamanaka
Born in Osaka in 1948, Nobuo Yamanaka began his career as an artist in 1971 with "Projecting a Film on a River," in which he projected a 16mm film of a flowing river onto the surface of the Tama River. Since then, he has been known for developing his own unique formative expression, from his representative series using the pinhole photography technique, which he developed in conjunction with his early film works, to installations and three-dimensional works that combine photographs.

While his activities expanded overseas and his international presence grew, including participation in the 15th Sao Paulo Biennial in 1979 and the 12th Paris Biennial in 1982 with a large site-specific work, he sadly passed away at the age of 34 from sepsis while in New York for a preliminary visit to a solo exhibition in 1982. In 1982, while in New York on a preliminary visit for a solo exhibition, he sadly passed away from sepsis at the young age of 34.

This exhibition will exhibit dozens of pinhole photographs taken during his short 12-year career, divided into two sessions, to trace the trajectory of Yamanaka's work, which once again pioneered an important visual art form.

In the first half of the exhibition, 14 works including "Pinhole of Overflowing Sun" from 1973, a rare early work, and 16 works from the "Sun in Tokyo" series from 1981 will be exhibited.
