Noriko Saso
This time, Parcel is hosting a solo exhibition by Noriko Saso. Since presenting a large-scale work exceeding 3 meters in height at the art event EastEast_Tokyo 2023 held at Kudanshita / Science Museum in February of this year, this will be the second presentation of her works from Parcel.

Saso is a sculptor who uses pliable materials such as glass and metal to express the materiality of the body. She explores mythical and fictional entities related to the concepts of life and death, drawing inspiration from stories like Izanami, who manifests anger from the land of Yomi as depicted in the Kojiki. Saso's sculptures, using the technique of stained glass, exhibit meticulous attention to detail, delicate fluctuations of glass created by manipulating the thickness of the material, as well as the strong lines of metal outlining ridges, and occasionally incorporating frontal and powerful forms, combining both solemnity and grace.

The large-scale works presented at this exhibition draw inspiration from classical paintings, such as Manet's "Olympia," where he depicted a nude woman from real society, and the classical subject of the Pieta, portraying the Virgin Mary and child holding the corpse. The hollow, shell-like shapes emphasize the materiality of the body as a vessel for the soul, and Saso utilizes the transparency of glass to introduce light into the work. This allows the sculpture to liberate the physical volume and the ponderous quality of the material. The woman, cradled by an abstract, mountain-like shape, captivates with her gaze despite maggots emerging from her body. In the dimness, she radiates vibrant and fantastical light, emitting a mysterious presence.

In her series of smaller works using materials like wine bottles and colored glass, Saso draws inspiration from classical sculptures, Greek mythology, and themes evoking a sense of eroticism. Leveraging the characteristics of glass casting, the sculptures feature the fingerprints left on the original mold, and the unintentional creation of organic forms through incomplete casting. This emphasizes their allure and the unique imbalance and expressions of glass create an image that seems to have detached from this tangible world, released from the constraints of time.
