Noriko Yanagisawa
Printmaker Noriko Yanagisawa has had a long association with Art Front Gallery, and this will be her first opportunity to present her work since her solo exhibition in 2001, the "Witches' 99" exhibition in 2008 (both at Hillside Forum) and the second Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial (2003).

Noriko Yanagisawa has been exploring the possibilities of printmaking, using wings, birds, half-human, half-beast, and ammonites as motifs to suit her images. In recent years, her thoughts have turned to the animals of Fukushima left behind by the Great East Japan Earthquake and those affected by nuclear testing after she visited Chernobyl in 2015. With the invasion of Ukraine also breaking out, to express these issues more realistically, the exhibition will present new works on parchment, gampi paper, and other supports, as well as drawings that are directly adhered to the works. The prints on display include "Words spoken by animals - Sea field I, II", which alludes to the Bikini Atoll, and "Words spoken by animals - N.Lat.72°, 90°”, which abstractly depicts Ukraine after the Russian invasion with tanks. The exhibition will show the current state of the artist's work.

'This world of reality and illusion, of abstract and embodiment in which a variety of shapes are milling about is, however, kept in order at the same time by the strong will toward structure.
It is her indomitable energy that supports consistently both an intense passion for expression and a strong feeling for order. She creates her formative world with her fully energetic imagination. (Shuji Takashina p.16, "Noriko Yanagisawa The Works 1964-2017", 2017). We look forward to seeing and interviewing you at the exhibition.
