Numinous Minamiyamashiro

Nara National Museum
Finished
The area in the southernmost part of Kyoto Prefecture adjacent to Nara is now called "Minamiyamashiro," after the former name of the country, Yamashiro-no-kuni. Kizu River runs through the gently sloping mountains, and temples began to be built in this area in the 7th century after the arrival of Buddhism.

Minamiyamashiro first appeared on the stage of history when Emperor Shomu built Kunikyo, and Gyoki played an active role in building a bridge over the Kizu River and constructing temples in the area. After the transfer of the capital from Heijo-kyo to Heian-kyo, Minamiyama-jo continued to gain importance as an area that served as a corridor between the old and new capitals. Temples were built in succession in close association with the great temples of Nara, such as Todaiji and Kofukuji, and the mountains along the Kizu River became a base for mountain asceticism as a sacred place away from the mundane world.

In the Kamakura period (1185-1333), Gedatsu Shonin Jokei, who studied at Kofukuji Temple, moved from Kasagitera Temple to Kaijusenji Temple, where he promoted the worship of Shakyamuni Buddha, Maitreya Bodhisattva, and Kannon Bodhisattva, and worked to restore precepts in the southern capital. In the Edo period (1603-1867), Taichu Shonin, who spread Nembutsu throughout Japan, used Mikanohara (Kamo Town, Kizugawa City) as his base of operations during his later years.

This exhibition, held to commemorate the completion of repairs to the Joruri-ji Kutai Amida Zo, features a collection of Buddhist statues and deities from temples and shrines in Minamiyamashiro and the surrounding area, as well as paintings, books and documents, archaeological artifacts, and more.
