As international borders open up between Japan and Australia, a collective of Australian Artists and photographers will come together to present Obfuscation & Delineation; Navigating the Boundaries of Australian Contemporary Photography; an exhibition that seeks to uncover the layers of Australian history and its influences through a series of photographs, as artists individually discover, document and construct meaning of their external environment. The exhibition will take place at Clinic Gallery in Tokyo, Sangenjaya, Setagaya, opening its doors from the 15th-30th of October, preceded by an Opening Night on the 14th of October.

The exhibition will consist of works by 9 Australian photographers, IIing Jake Nemirovsky, Rochelle Marie Adam, Ben Hosking, Jack Cannon, Morganna Magee, Abigail Varney, Matthew Stanton, Amanda Williams and Rohan Hutchinson. The subject matters featured in the artists’ imagery are unique to that of the individual; however, there is a subtle commonality that intertwines one artist’s work with the next. Perhaps it is something spurred on by the effects of the pandemic, each artist not merely captures an image but searches for meaning beyond what the eye can see and delves deeper into the “layers” of the image. Likened to the works of an archaeologist, the artists each uncover, document, analyse and construct new meaning to what they have captured of their external environment and subject matters. This transfer of “life” into imagery takes on meaning through not only historical influences but also other photographic practices beyond Australian photography, as well as one’s experiences in life.

The works will be exhibited at Clinic Tokyo, a gallery space renovated by renowned architects Schemata. Located in Sangenjaya, just a 5-minute train ride away from the bustling streets of Shibuya, the gallery space can be found at a narrow dead-end street, hidden just beyond a Blue Bottle Coffee Cafe – highly identifiable by its famous blue logo. Formerly a physicians clinic (thus its namesake), the space exudes intimacy and warmth, contrasted by earthy, exposed concrete walls.

The site has housed gallery owner Kota Okukubo’s family for three generations; however, now also aims to bring to life creative and cultural activities and to enrich the lives of both visitors and neighbours alike.

‘Clinic is not only a gallery but a place for people to gather, whether they are just passing through or something specific has drawn them to our space.’ says Kota Okukubo.

‘Through this exhibition, I look forward to giving the people of Tokyo a glimpse into Australian photography, which is not yet widely known in Japan. I hope for this exhibition to be an eye-opening and inspiring event for our community.
The gallery will present the artists’ documentations in a borderless manner with the absence of any sort of linear narrative; however, will invite viewers to reflect upon their own knowledge and experiences to construct meanings behind an image through “digging” and discovering.
