Our Precious Collection

Morioka History and Culture Museum
Finished
The Hoyukan Collection, housed separately in the Morioka Museum of History and Culture and the Hara-Kei Memorial Museum, consists of approximately 100 works of art. The collection includes Edo paintings by Kawaguchi Gakurei, who was a painter for the Morioka domain, and the brothers Kakuryusai Tagusari and Ranmuro Hondo, who served as domain officials, as well as works by modern painters from the Tohoku region. These works of art were collected over a long period by Tomojiro, grandfather of the donor, Hiroomi Kanazawa, and his father, Shigeo, to keep the excellent local works, including items from the former Morioka domain lord Nambu family collection, in the local community instead of dispersing them.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the donation of the Hoyukan Collection, this exhibition will reexamine the works that comprise this collection, not one by one as an independent entity, but as a group, a "collection. This exhibition will reveal the thoughts of the three generations of the Kanazawa family who collected the collection, as well as some aspects of the history of art in Morioka, Iwate, and the Tohoku region.
