Paper Parade
LAG is pleased to announce the rotating exhibition “Pixel Landscape_02” by Morita Atsushi (Paper Parade) from Friday, December 13, 2024, to Wednesday, December 25, 2024.

The works named “Pixel Landscape” reconstruct the physical domain with digital pixel expression by over-printing layers of pixel expression on media such as posters and advertisements of famous paintings that have colored certain landscapes. The Pixel Art used as an expression method is a low-resolution pixel art expression, which developed under the functional restriction of computers and games popularized in the 1980s, and it has attracted attention as a graphic method that is both old and new. Going through abstract landscapes using Pixel Art on the posters that exist in everyday life, the artist will explore possibilities beyond the digital and physical domains.

In this exhibition, The theme is how to deal with intellectual property and copyrighted works as a creator. In recent times, because of the spreading of the Internet, on social network services, a lot of people and companies, including amateur creators, are ordinarily posting some kind of copyrighted work online and communicating. Furthermore, with the advent of image generation AI and NFT, we are now living in an era where it is becoming difficult to interpret copyright laws based solely on traditional concepts.

The “Pixel Landscape” series of works suggests one way to face the many possibilities for dealing with copyrighted works by applying pixel treatments to the advertising posters and the famous painting posters that the artist has collected, thereby adding a new interpretation of the original creation as a landscape seen through pixels.

This exhibition is the second part of the special exhibition “Pixel Landscape_01/Pixel Landscapes” which was held at Shibuya Hikarie 8/ CUBE 1, 2, 3 in September 2014 and received favorable reviews, and Live Art Books in charge of collaborating to produce the work. Please take a look at this attempt to explore new values in paper and printings through the works.
