From July 14 to 31, the Embassy of Portugal in Tokyo is hosting an exhibition titled Paulo de Cantos: 8 + 1 = 1.
Paulo de Cantos (1892–1979) was a Portuguese educator and amateur typographer who was deeply involved in the educational reform movements of the early 20th century.
His books combined structural experimentation with rich visual design: diagrams, typography, and, above all, the tactile possibilities of manual typesetting. He also intervened in the structure of the language itself, proposing new notation systems, such as “PAK,” and an alternative writing system for Portuguese.
