Picture Books of the Country Next Door - The World of Korean Illustration

ILF Douga Museum of Art
Finished
Since the 2000s, a succession of innovative picture book authors has emerged in South Korea, gaining attention at international picture book exhibitions. These new authors are being actively promoted, with their works translated and published in English, French, and other languages, spreading globally.

Starting with Han Byung-ho winning the Golden Apple Award at the Bratislava Illustration Biennial in 2009, Lee Myung-ae won the Golden Apple Award at the same biennial in 2021, and Suzy Lee received the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration in 2022. These accolades have continued to increase. With this growing international recognition, Japanese translations of Korean picture books have also been published, making them accessible to Japanese readers.

This exhibition will showcase approximately 200 original works by nine authors who have been active mainly since the 2000s. It will provide an overview of the dynamic landscape of contemporary Korean picture books and will be the first exhibition in Japan to offer a comprehensive view of the original artworks of Korean picture books, which are gaining international prominence.
