Piero Golia
For the first time in Japan, Piero Golia presents his 2018 series of traditional Japanese woodblock prints in the exhibition "Impressions" at Graphpaper, Kyoto. These works, meticulously crafted in collaboration with master artisans from Mie under the guidance of Ko Kado in Kyoto, bring Golia’s conceptual exploration into conversation with centuries-old Japanese craftsmanship. Printed on washi paper by Yosiki Yamaguchi, the series bridges abstraction and reality, honoring cultural traditions while reimagining them for the contemporary viewer.

"Impressions" invites audiences to enter a reflective space where Golia revitalizes the ancient medium of woodblock printing through a modern lens. His works present a delicate balance of texture and form, intertwining conceptual ideas with the physicality of the craft. Through subtle shifts in tone and structure, the series creates a dialogue between modernity and tradition, allowing viewers to feel the resonance of history within each print. This exhibition underscores Golia’s commitment to pushing artistic boundaries, transforming an age-old technique into a fresh commentary on the relationship between the timeless and the transient.

In addition to its conceptual richness, Golia's "Impressions" highlights the tactile nature of the woodblock process. Each print bears the artisans' expert handwork, with every carved line and layered color attesting to their skill. Golia’s collaboration with these artisans introduces a dynamic exchange of ideas, celebrating the collaborative spirit of art-making and the enduring relevance of traditional techniques in today’s rapidly evolving artistic landscape.
