Pikadon Era

Maruki Gallery for the Hiroshima Panels
Finished
In 1950, Iri Maruki and Maruki Toshi published a picture book called "Pikadon." During the tense period of the Allied Occupation and just after the outbreak of the Korean War, Pikadon conveyed to the public the devastation of the atomic bombing, which was forbidden by censorship to be reported. This exhibition is a commemoration of the publication, aiming to revisit Pikadon and shed light on the lesser-known historical context of Maruki and Toshi's travels across Japan with their Hiroshima Panels during the same era. It will focus on reproductions such as woodblock prints, posters, and other printed materials. Additionally, it will display reproductions of the Hiroshima Panels made by local elementary school students in the 1950s at Tokuoji Temple in Okazaki, Aichi.
