As an alternative way of drawing, the repetitive motions of embroidery, poking holes and folding back again, unfurl the body as a channel to emanate the aura of natural sceneries. A tangible ripple of energy is brought about in the traversing threads. In time, a sort of meditation emerges from this prosaic routine. The resonant vibrations of stitching release tiny thrusts, spiritual traces of effort, among the multitudinous anima of the eight million spirits.

Ray’s personal worldview overlaps seamlessly with the essence of Shintō, and especially the aspect of animism. Ever since she was little, she seemed inbred with the ability to feel compassion towards organic things, both animate and inert, in Mother Nature. An innate sense that something spiritual must live within this granule of rock, or lurk in that field of grass; an intrinsic realization that a river runs with vivacious vigor; that the rays of light above deliver their own assured messages.

Underlying motifs such as this have embedded themselves in the narrative language of her graphic novels, illustrations, and other art forms. Under such context, the exhibition name “iki-iki” implies an inwardly-directed psyche that exists inconspicuously in all places. The word psyche is from the ancient Greek for breath, which in turn came to mean living, as well as heart and soul. Breath in Japanese is written as 息 (iki). Iki can also mean to live or to be on the move. It’s a term subtly expressing what vitality is. And vitality is not limited to animate beings, but can be felt throughout what surrounds us.
