Rediscovering the Charm of Antique Kimonos - The Dream of the Taisho Era: The Secret Meisen Stories

Yayoi Museum
Finished
Meisen was the driving force behind the antique kimono boom. Meisen was very popular among schoolgirls from the Taisho to the early Showa period, and its many innovative colors and patterns, which are not found in modern kimonos, are very exciting and inspiring.

This exhibition introduces about 40 meisen selected from the collection of about 600 items by Masako Kiryu, a collector and researcher of meisen. Kimono stylist Rafu Ohno will coordinate the pieces.

The culture of schoolgirls 100 years ago was a series of new things, a history of modest struggles. It was a time when Western culture and ways of thinking flowed into traditional Japanese values. Through Meisen, this exhibition will explore the culture of young women born during this transitional period.
