Rikuji Makabe
Rikuji Makabe was born in Ishikawa and spent his post-art school years in Tokyo. Thirteen years ago, he returned to his hometown to continue his creative activities following the Tohoku earthquake. At the Oku-Noto International Art Festival, he presented his work "Blue Boat Hut" in Uedomachi, Suzu City. Through his site-specific works created in Noto, he has been captivated by the local culture and inspired by Tohaku Hasegawa, deepening his connection with the region. Witnessing the drastic changes brought about by the Noto Peninsula earthquake on January 1 of this year, he decided to make "Noto" the theme of this planned exhibition. Makabe's works, while using nature as a motif, encapsulate the essence of human activity, life and death, and the diversity of values. His fragmented, rectangular collages unfold repeatedly like scrolls or folding screens, conveying the artist's endless prayer for renewal.
