Taro Yamamoto
Rimpa is an art movement that originated in Kyoto during the early Edo period, created by the townspeople. The movement features artists such as Sotatsu Tawaraya, Korin Ogata, Hoitsu Sakai, and Sekka Kamisaka. Every approximately 100 years, a representative painter of the era emerged within Rimpa, which can be considered Japan's first art movement lasting over 400 years.

Throughout its history, the method of repeating the same motifs, such as "Fujin Raijin" (Wind and Thunder Gods), Tawaraya's "Cranes and Thirty-Six Immortals of Poetry," and Ogata's "Irises Folding Screen," has been passed down. Yamamoto employs this method to create his unique world.

This exhibition, inspired by Ogata's "Irises Folding Screen," presents a new series, "Flowers Iris," which pays homage to Andy Warhol's "Flowers" series, along with recent works by Yamamoto. With the cooperation of Unsodo, the only publisher in Japan of hand-printed woodblock books, the exhibition also features homage works by Yamamoto to Kamisaka and Hochu Nakamura. By comparing the works of modern Rimpa artists with those of Yamamoto, the hope is visitors will appreciate how Yamamoto inherits the aspirations and designs of his predecessors while creating new styles with his unique expression.
