Robert is a draftsman living in Tokyo. He was born in a little village in the Bavarian Forest in Germany, but he has made Tokyo his second home now. He lives in Shitamachi, the area between the Sumida River and the Edo River. Robert takes long walks through Shitamachi at night, and many of the elements in his drawings are existing locations or buildings he has encountered on his city hikes.
In his youth, Robert trained as an Engineering Draughtsman in a German machine factory designing machine parts and drawing plans for manufacturing on tracing (or parchment) paper in black ink. Robert has retained this technique, and all originals are drawn in water-resistant black ink using technical isograph pens.
Most of Robert’s drawings a dark reflecting the dark city he encounters during his hikes. Robert combines elements he meets into a new context in which they are usually not found, giving them a new critical meaning.
