INAX Museums is pleased to present "Rooted in Clay," an exhibition featuring clay sculptures by three artists from Japan and abroad from April 29 to September 19, 2023.
Athena and Bill Steen, who use clay in their architecture, have Native American, Pueblo, and Mexican roots. For more than 30 years, they have held workshops in Arizona, North America, near the Mexican border, to promote the use of natural materials in home building.
Syuhei Hasado uses natural materials as the basis for his work and has visited the Steens three times since 2004. He has deepened their relationship by sharing traditional Japanese techniques and the spirit of craftsmanship through practice.
For this exhibition, we have invited Athena, Bill, and Hasado, who have roots in different clay architectural cultures, to publicly create clay sculptures on the themes of Pueblo, Mexico, and Japan.
