Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Botanical Art and the Development of Delicious Food

Museum of Modern Art, Gunma
Finished
This exhibition is held in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, which houses the world's largest botanical art collection exceeding 200,000 pieces. Britain, which led the way in modernization ahead of the world, discovered plants globally, sought them as food ingredients, and imported them. Initially recording the rarity of plants in botanical illustrations, this expanded into research and appreciation, eventually becoming indispensable to British culture through tea and spice-rich cuisine. The exhibition consists of six sections focusing on "food," the foundation supporting people's lives within the world of plants. Highlighting magnificent botanical art related to ingredients, cuisine, and gourmet items, alongside paintings, crafts, and even recipe books, it presents the botanical tales of plants surrounding the abundant British food culture of the 18th and 19th centuries through approximately 200 works.
