Royal Copenhagen and Scandinavian Design - Art Nouveau to Modern

Koriyama City Museum of Art
Finished
In the long winters of the Scandinavian region, home life has been highly valued. Various Scandinavian designs that adorn daily life are beloved worldwide. With a focus on Denmark and Sweden, this exhibition explores the charm of Scandinavian design, primarily focusing on ceramics, silverware, and glassware from the late 19th to the 20th century.

Royal Copenhagen, originating from the Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Denmark, gained international acclaim early on for its production of high-quality porcelain, becoming a pioneer of Scandinavian Art Nouveau. Around the same time, Georg Jensen, who began his career as a potter at the Bing & Grøndahl kiln, a competitor at that time, later founded the renowned Georg Jensen brand, famous for its silver products.

In Sweden, Rörstrand considered the oldest pottery kiln in the Nordic region, has been producing dignified ceramics. In the Småland region of the country, glass craftsmanship has been flourishing since ancient times, and in the 1950s, glass manufacturers such as Orrefors and Kosta produced artistic glassworks of high aesthetic value.

This exhibition presents approximately 200 carefully selected pieces from private collections in Japan and Europe, introducing the sparkling world of Scandinavian design.
