Royal Copenhagen and Scandinavian Design - Art Nouveau to Modern

Okuda Genso Sayume Art Museum
Finished
In the long winters of the Nordic countries, there has been a focus on cherishing the time spent indoors and incorporating excellent design into household items such as tableware. Nordic design, which creates a rich living environment, is now beloved worldwide. This exhibition focuses on Denmark and Sweden, introducing works of Nordic design centered around ceramics, silverware, and glassware from the late 19th to the 20th century.

Originating from the Royal Danish Porcelain Factory, "Royal Copenhagen" gained international acclaim early on for its production of high-quality porcelain and became a pioneer of Nordic Art Nouveau. Alongside it was the renowned "Bing & Grøndahl," known for its sculptural expression. It was at this kiln that Jensen began his career as a potter and later founded "Georg Jensen," famous for its silver products combining artistry and practicality.

In Sweden, the esteemed "Rörstrand," considered the oldest pottery kiln in the Nordic region, produces dignified products. Additionally, glass craftsmanship has flourished in the Småland region for centuries, leading to the creation of glassworks with high technical and artistic merit following the exploration of new expressions by "Orrefors" and "Kosta" in the 1950s.

This exhibition will display approximately 200 items from rare vintage collections both domestically and internationally, offering insight into the charm of Nordic design from Art Nouveau to Modern.
