Ryuzaburo Umehara
Ryuzaburo Umehara (1888-1986), one of Japan's leading modern Western-style painters, had deep ties to Izu. Throughout his life, Umehara visited Izu and surrounding areas such as Atami, Enoura, and Ohito. The magnificent and glittering works of art produced there became widely known as his masterpieces.

In his mid-twenties, after returning from his studies in France, Umehara repeatedly searched for ways to depict the Japanese climate. In his 40s, he often stayed at a friend's villa in Atami, where he painted "Portrait of Akara" and "Rai no Miya". In the summers, Umehara and his family visited Enoura on the west coast of Izu, where he established his own unique style of painting, including "Enoura Lingering Moon" which captured the Japanese landscape in a magnificent manner. When World War II broke out, Umehara evacuated to Ohito. He stayed at the Ohito Hotel on top of the mountain and was fascinated by the majestic view of Mount Fuji from the hotel.

This exhibition introduces the relationship between Ryuzaburo Umehara and Izu through paintings from his early to late years in Izu and also explores the historical background through newly discovered materials such as his Izu diary.
