Sabrina Horak "So close to Paradise"

Artists

Sabrina Horak
In this exhibition, Horak continues to explore her [self] and its shifting identities.
In her unsubtle works, she transforms her own body into an avatar, that channels her emotional landscapes and subjective experiences through vivid hues, creating a sometimes menacing, sometimes grotesque universe.

In this universe, the narratives are surreal- in “Human Sacrifice”, the central work of this exhibition, scantily- clad women are climbing up a large skull rendered in pink and purple, trying to reach a gathering of people conducting a human sacrifice on its top-and they all have the artists’ face.
The smaller works are showing the artist taking the poses of important nudes from the art canon, investigating her own femininity and navigating themes such as identity and male and female gaze.

Painted elements are merged with a multitude of materials such as gold chains and pseudo-antique frames, clunkily taking up space, like the artist wants to take up space in this world. Their diversity is echoing the artist’s restless attempts to unite the fragments of her own identity, a never-ending pursuit.
In this exhibition, the concept of “Paradise” stands for “inner peace”. So close, but not quite there yet.
