Sachi Tamai digests the traditional Japanese technique of katazome (stencil dyeing), infusing it with her own unique perspective and methods. The colors seep into the fabric, creating soft gradations that gently emerge. Within the flat world of cloth, quiet depth unfolds. There, Tamai’s characteristic gentle gaze toward humanity overlaps and resonates as painting.
This exhibition presents works centered around “stones” that evoke memories of childhood. Just as the colors and shapes once dyed remain within the fabric, the layers of time and traces of memory breathe within them. The stones—like fragments of recollection gathered by hand— take on new forms within the passage of dyeing, radiating a quiet yet profound presence.
