Sachiko Yoshizawa "Hometown"

Artists

Sachiko Yoshizawa
The mother, afflicted by dementia and seemingly forgetting everything, suddenly burst into tears, saying "I want to go home." However, this home wasn't where the brother, lost in war, was born, nor was it the current apartment. It wasn't even another house from before the war where the family had lived. It was a longing to return to the hometown where the family had lived before the war began.

This longing to return home resonates not only with the mother, but also with those passing away daily in places like Ukraine and Gaza, and with those who were victims of atrocities in concentration camps—indeed, it resonates with all of us. Since beginning to share works, Sachiko Yoshizawa has expressed anger towards war and feelings for the deceased through paintings on traditional Japanese paper using ink and pigments, alongside various symbolic objects. Now, there is a prompt to ponder what "home" means to each of us.
