Saki Kitamura + Ayako Ishiba "How Do U Spell"

Saki Kitamura and Ayako Ishiba are artists who primarily use printmaking, photography, and printing techniques as the basis for their unique expressions.

They are deeply interested in the skeletal functions unconsciously produced by subjects and layers along with visual perception and believe that the accumulation of these elements constitutes their work. The title of this exhibition, "How Do U Spell," is inspired by the discovery that their respective works, much like the spelling of an English word, are formed by the accumulation of elements and memories.

In each of their works, landscapes, objects, figures, color fields, lines, and layers (or perspectives) coexist independently as distinct elements, much like alphabets, while also depending on each other as part of a composition. These elements are interconnected within the frame by the artists' hidden, secretive rules (spellings), making their playful interactions visible. However, it must not be forgotten that these seemingly invaluable plays can acquire entirely new meanings or names through the interaction with the viewer's memory (which the artists can never know) as they stand before the work.
