Sakuzo Hineno "A Retrospective"

Mie Prefectural Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Sakuzo Hineno
Born in what is now Iga City, Mie Prefecture, Sakuzo Hineno (1907-1984) is known as a pioneer in ceramic design. After studying at the Tokyo Higher School of Arts and Crafts, he developed his talent as a designer at the Yamacha (Tsubaki) Kiln and the National Ceramics Testing Institute. After becoming independent after World War II, he based himself in Iga and traveled to Aichi, Gifu, Mie, Shiga, and other ceramic centers to teach and spread his designs.

In the postwar era, when manufacturing was becoming increasingly mechanized and mass-produced, Hineno focused on "crafts," modern sensibilities in daily utensils that were primarily handmade. Hineno preached a humanistic design that took advantage of the skills and individuality of each craftsman and the diversity of each region.

This exhibition is the largest retrospective of Hineno's work to date, tracing the life of Sakuzo Hineno through approximately 180 pieces of his artwork that have been preserved in various locations.
