Kinkan Gallery is pleased to present Sana Kohmoto’s solo exhibition, Hums Behind Mirror, on view from May 31 through June 22.
Kohmoto photographs the everyday objects and scenes that surround her, creating her work by revisiting and reinterpreting them.
For Kohmoto, the mirror and humming in the title, Hums Behind Mirror, point to a state that precedes what we perceive as an “appearance.” If the reflection on a mirror’s surface can be considered a “manifestation,” then the hum may represent its source—a subtle presence that has yet to take form in language or meaning, something closer to intuitive perception, like music. This inner “something,” still unspoken, lingers beneath or behind the world we perceive. Shaped by each individual’s perspective, it exists as a sign or intangible presence that quietly calls out to our senses.
Kohmoto continues her darkroom practice as if to gently scoop up this unformed presence, immersing herself in a slow flow of time. “It’s a process of eliminating the information and meanings—such as place or time—associated with the moment of shooting and reconfronting what is actually present in the image,” she says.
Carefully shaped over time, her works invite the viewer’s own perspective, allowing a new flow of time to emerge—one from which yet another new form may begin to take shape.
