Satoshi Someya + Aya Kawato Exhibition by Imura Art Gallery

CADAN Yurakucho
Finished

Artists

Satoshi Someya, Aya Kawato
Satoshi Someya uses lacquer as a material to create works on the theme of "decoration," which is a decorative act in lacquer art, and his works are not limited to the field of crafts. In the course of his research on decoration, Someya noticed subtle deviations in the decoration of past lacquer works. He sublimated this research into his own work, the "Mistracing" series, which he has been producing in recent years. By tracing (tracing/transcribing) past lacquer works in Someya's own way, he creates works of art that reveal the stories and landscapes that can be glimpsed from the objects.

Aya Kawato, on the other hand, also started her art education in the field of crafts, dyeing, and weaving, and after studying abroad in Paris, she began painting "grid paintings" that apply the weaving system during her graduate school days in Tokyo. Influenced by his father, a neuroscientist, Kawato has been strongly aware of the fact that he grasps the world through his brain since he was a child, and his work focuses on the optical illusion effect of overlapping grids and the unintended beauty brought about by uncontrolled displacement caused by manual work.

For their first two-person exhibition, the two artists prepared for the show by creating new works in line with their own themes, while being aware of the overlap between their concepts. The two artists say that even when looking at the same object, it is interesting to see how each person perceives it differently.
