Satsuma

Yokoyama Art Museum
Finished
In 1598, a Joseon potter influenced by Shimazu Yoshihiro pioneered Satsuma ware, blending techniques from Kyoyaki and other regions. White Satsuma ware, crafted with white clay and intricate glaze penetrations, became an official product of the Satsuma domain.

At the 1867 World Exposition in Paris, Satsuma porcelain adorned with gold glaze gained acclaim, popularizing "Satsuma" across Europe and the United States and initiating an export era. This led to overglaze painting on Satsuma porcelain bases and the replication of the Satsuma style in various regions. Satsuma production and export extended to Tokyo, Yokohama, Kutani, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, and Nagasaki. The mythical allure of the golden island in the Far East, embraced in Western legend, may have inspired the fusion of Eastern romance with Satsuma.

This exhibition showcases radiant Satsuma pieces from the museum's collection.
