Savor water, Embracing water

Issey Miyake Ginza | Cube

Approximately 60% of the human body is composed of water. In the earliest stages of life, this percentage is even higher—reaching nearly 90% in a developing fetus. The amniotic fluid that surrounds and sustains the unborn child serves as a protective sea, mirroring the origins of life itself.

If our physical environment shelters us externally, and clothing wraps us intimately, then food is what nourishes us from within. Yet food, too, is inseparable from water. Constantly cycling through the Earth, water is not only the source of life, but also the fundamental medium through which human existence is nurtured—defined by the interplay of wrapping and being wrapped.

Culinary artist, Fukiko Yokoyama explores the fundamental relationship between humanity, water, and food through a unique perspective. Transcending the boundaries of traditional Washoku, her approach reflects a deep, intrinsic connection to nature. Her book “Hyakumi Saisai", co-authored with photographer Shigeru Akimoto, captures this philosophy through striking imagery.

This exhibition presents photographs from “Hyakumi Saisai” alongside an immersive installation incorporating the scent of dashi or vegetables, and sound, as well as Hogushi Gasuri, a textile reminiscent of kombu. Engaging multiple senses, the exhibition invites visitors to rediscover water as the essence of life—an element that transcends food, clothing, and shelter, shaping our very existence.
