Saya Irie
Saya Irie erases images drawn on printed matter, such as daily necessities, with an eraser and uses the erased scraps to create statues. For example, an image of the Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) drawn on a hanging scroll is made into a three-dimensional sculpture. Irie’s works humorously raise contemporary issues concerning the relationship with representations.

Currently based in Hiroshima, Irie was selected for the Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art in 2009 and received the 6th Shiseido Art Egg award in 2012. Major recent solo exhibitions include "Junshin Ruins - Labyrinth of Love" (2019, Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art) and "The Great Evil Festival" (2021, Hiroshima Art Center). In 2019, Irie received a Pola Art Foundation overseas research grant and this year she will participate in the ISCP residency program in New York.

In this exhibition, Irie will exhibit a new relief work in which she erased an old art book depicting Australian landscapes and reinterpreted its image, as well as a three-dimensional version of a rare hanging scroll with a depiction of the Virgin Mary.
