Sayaka Toda
Sayaka Toda grew up in a house where bonsai was the family business. She was fascinated by the strength of exotic species, mostly tropical plants, growing wild in Tokyo, in contrast to the artificial nature she was accustomed to, and has continued to photograph them.

This exhibition features photographs she took of "sotetsu," at a temple in Onomichi, Hiroshima, during her residency there.

There is always a magnificent sotetsu planted at temples in Onomichi, Hiroshima. Despite the combination of a purely Japanese temple and a tropical plant, the local people accept it as a matter of course. For Toda, who is accustomed to living in the Kanto region, it was an alien existence.

When Toda visited Gallery Merrow, the scene of a concrete, inorganic building with plants soaring to the ceiling remained strongly in her memory. She also sensed a similarity between this scene and the sotetsu in Hiroshima and brought together a heterogeneous worldview at the gallery.
