Sculptures Connecting Memories: Reflecting on 75 Years of the School Building

Kan Yasuda Sculpture Museum – Arte Piazza Bibai
Finished
Former Bibai City Sakae Elementary School, which served as a primary school in a coal mining town, once had as many as 1,250 students at its peak, but closed its doors in 1981. The wooden school building, reminiscent of a small light, still houses the municipal Bibai Kindergarten on the first floor. While the lively voices of the kindergarten children echo through the first floor of the building, the second floor remains frozen in time—sculptor Kan Yasuda contemplates, "If I could place sculptures here, silently accompanying the 'something' that was definitely here, though invisible."

The transformation of the second floor of the school building into a "gallery" took place in 1999 (Heisei 11). The sculptures that were once scattered throughout the classrooms and corridors now quietly welcome visitors. What is it about the space created by sculptures and the wooden school building that captivates people's hearts so deeply?

This exhibition introduces the wooden school building, which has retained memories of the past 75 years since its construction as a primary school.
