Fuji Gallery Shinjuku, located on the basement floor of the Hilton Tokyo in Nishi-Shinjuku, Tokyo, is pleased to announce that Seiko Matsushita’s solo exhibition “Shackled to the Courtyard” will be held from Friday 2nd until Sunday 25th of February 2024 in which she will show mainly drawings.

Starting with installations using cement spheres and iron in the 1990s, Seiko Matsushita has been showing her works in Japan and around the world, flexibly changing materials and methods of expression, such as beak objects, paraffin paper dresses, three-dimensional works using feathers, wax, and felt fabric, performance, animation, photography, and more. Each artwork richly expresses societies filled with commonplace anomalies and the fragile, vulnerable, yet resilient inner lives of the people, especially women, who live there.

The drawings, which can be seen as the origin of her long career as an artist, are a delicate and bold depiction of the human image that Matsushita has held as an insight into the depths of human nature.
