Selfie Exhibition

Mylab Shibuya
Finished
1983. Back when the term "selfie" didn't even exist, Japan had already patented the technology that would become the selfie stick. In the 1990s, the Purikura (Print Club) machines appeared in Shibuya. With Shibuya being the holy land of gyaru and deco culture, further refinement was added to selfie culture in terms of photography techniques and methods. Born in Japan and nurtured in Shibuya, selfie culture has evolved. In Shibuya, where selfie culture continues to evolve, the Selfie Exhibition is an experimental ground to discover the possibilities of selfies in the future.

The exhibition showcases experimental devices that explore the future of selfie culture. Visitors are greeted with installations like the "Thermo Selfie," which turns temperature checks from the COVID-19 era into "memories," and the "Yell Selfie," which turns cheers allowed after the pandemic into "commemorations." All these selfie devices born from the changing society can be experienced firsthand. In Shibuya, the birthplace of selfie culture, this exhibition will explore the potential of future selfies.
