Sentimental and Inspirational: The Journeys of the Artists

Umi-Mori Art Museum
Finished
Travel has been a source of inspiration for artists since ancient times. Japanese artists have also traveled to various places and used their experiences to express themselves. This exhibition traces the footsteps of these traveling artists through the collection of Japanese paintings from the pre-modern to modern periods held by Umi-Mori Art Museum.

Here are four highlights of the exhibition. Although most of the artists featured here lived in different eras, Matsuo Basho followed in the footsteps of Hoshi Saigyo in Tohoku, Buson Yosa depicted Basho's travels, and Yoson Ikeda was inspired by the traveling haiku poet Yamatoka Taneda, who was strongly influenced by Basho.

The poets were influenced by the travels of the ancients, and they themselves traveled to feed their activities while connecting their footprints somehow. Poets admire the places of interest composed by their predecessors, painters try to capture in their sketches the landscapes of places they have not yet seen, and artists have many other reasons for traveling. This exhibition will show the background of their attraction to travel through their works.
