Known as a massive ruin, the World Heritage site of Gunkanjima (Hashima Island) in Nagasaki Prefecture, is currently challenging to access. While guided tours are available, 90% of the island is restricted, and landings are often prohibited due to adverse sea conditions. In recent years, significant deterioration has occurred, posing a major challenge for local authorities in preserving cultural heritage, restoring it, and utilizing it for tourism.

Against this backdrop, aiming for a new approach to World Heritage conservation, "Heritage Databank" collaborated with the Nagasaki City World Heritage Office to conduct a digital archive of Gunkanjima using the latest 3D scanning technology. Another Gunkanjima has been born in the virtual world.

At the Shibuya Gunkanjima Exhibition, various expressions using this data are explored. This includes the "Virtual Gunkanjima Photo Exhibition" by photographer Kenji Sato, the "Virtual Gunkanjima Landing Exhibition" where visitors can virtually land in restricted areas and take photos, and the "Virtual Gunkanjima Dissection Exhibition." The aim is to record the current Gunkanjima as 3D data and leave a lasting impression in people's memories through various expressions and experiences. The goal is to turn conservation efforts into an exciting venture involving people and companies worldwide, representing the "new conservation" envisioned by Heritage Databank.
