Shigeru Ishii
Shigeru Ishii was born in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, and grew up listening to the sound of cars passing by on Meiji Street and the Yamanote Line as a lullaby. During his youth, he was influenced by the Tenjo Sajiki theater troupe, which moved its base to Namikibashi, Shibuya Ward, and enrolled in the Photography Department of Tama Art University and began working as a photographer while still a student there. Ishii also devoted himself to the training of artists at Tama Art University and J. F. Oberlin University for about 40 years until his retirement, producing a large number of artists.

Ishii's work, from pinhole photographs to recent video works shot with smartphones, is consistent in its focus on light, which is the root of images, and in its use of time, such as change and weathering, as its subject matter. Water, sand, and stone. For Ishii, these are the fleeting appearances of the formless subjects of time, and he may be gently trapping these encounters in the photographic frame. The fact that Ishii's students were able to create freely and express their individuality can be attributed to his generous eye as a photographer.

This exhibition is the result of the collaboration of Ishii's students and the Ishii Seminar alumni at Tama Art University, who worked together with Ishii to create the exhibition. This is not a retrospective exhibition of past works, but rather an opportunity to view photographer Shigeru Ishii's work from a different perspective.
