Shiho Kagabu Exhibition

CADAN Yurakucho
Finished

Artists

Shiho Kagabu
Shiho Kagabu creates sculptures using various objects such as broken found items and construction materials. In her work, the everyday meaning and function of these objects are deconstructed and recombined to form new relationships, which are then placed within the space. Kagabu, who says, "I doubt the rules defined by humans, but I believe in the rules of the Earth and the universe," approaches objects, listens to their voices, and becomes part of them, constructing the natural principles of creation and circulation within the exhibition space.

This exhibition will feature work made of aluminum and balloons, changing shapes as they are exhibited. Focusing on balance in her works, Kagabu interest in natural phenomena like earthquakes was sparked by the events of 3.11, and her experiences with childbirth and parenting have deepened her recognition of the natural, including corporeality. In addition to Kagabu's longstanding interest in "time" and "change," she has been considering the Earth through comparative mythology and geographical commonalities for over a decade. Kagabu engages in these thoughts through everyday activities like cooking, walking, traveling, and living. She has visited volcanic regions in Japan, Italy, Hawaii, and more recently Crete and Santorini in Greece, where she walks, swims, and tastes the local nuts, exploring differences in water, climate, landscape, and culture, reflecting on time, and sometimes sensing the efficacy of images and stories. While contemplating the creation of sculptures, she explores common languages through various exchanges of objects, environmental changes, and physical conditions.
