Shingo Wakagi
This exhibition features photographer Shingo Wakagi. These are photographs that one encounters by chance while traveling, taken by unknown photographers at unknown times and places. These photographs, often referred to as Anonymous Photos, not only capture the subjects but also reveal the feelings and backgrounds of the photographers toward their subjects, which fade or deteriorate over time along with the physical degradation of the paper. Through these images, one can perceive a depth of photography beyond pure photographic expression.

At this exhibition, which received favorable reviews when it was presented in Hakata last year, a selection has been made from a vast collection of test prints taken by Shingo Wakagi with a Leica 35mm film camera between 1998 and 2018. Wakagi himself searched and gathered over 1,000 prints that had been stored in a warehouse for many years, and the selected photographs were curated by a curator for display. In this modern age of storing data (memory) digitally, what significance does the past as an object of photography hold?
