Shinshu and Prince Shotoku

Ryukoku Museum
Finished
The worship of Prince Shotoku, which gained great momentum during the Kamakura period (1185-1333), not only influenced the spiritual culture of the Japanese people but also left a significant mark on the history of Japanese art by producing numerous outstanding works of art, including paintings and sculptures.

Shinran, on the other hand, was deeply devoted to Prince Shotoku as the "Lord of Wako," and produced many "Taishi Housan," Japanese hymns of praise for Prince Shotoku, until his later years. He also had a statue of Prince Shotoku enshrined beside him and was involved in the production of Dharma treasures related to Prince Shotoku.

This exhibition will touch upon Shinran deep love for Prince Shotoku and reconfirm the role played by Shinran and his disciples in the worship of the prince. The exhibition will also reintroduce the diverse Dharma treasures related to Shotoku worship that have been created by subsequent disciples of Shinran.
