Shiori Horie
Shiho Yoshida's solo exhibition commemorates Tokyo Polytechnic University's 100th anniversary.

This exhibition marks the highly anticipated solo exhibition of Shiho Yoshida, who has made remarkable achievements since the presentation of her research results from the 2021 Itsukushima Cultural Award Overseas Study Program, followed by the VOCA Award for Excellence in 2021 and the exhibition "Birth 110 Years: Junnosuke Matsumoto/[Small Exhibition] Shiho Yoshida—To the Untouchable" at the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura Annex in 2022.

The exhibition will feature approximately 110 watercolor paintings she first exhibited at the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura Annex in 2022, and new works from the "Future Behind" series, which received the VOCA Award for Excellence.

In recent years, Yoshida experienced a period of fear, possibly the first time in her life, with an inability to paint. The extent of her distress during this period, having been a consistent creator, is hard to imagine. However, amidst this turmoil, she found solace in creating and exploring the world of drawing, a form of expression she began during her studies in Paris. She continued to create numerous small drawings.

These drawings feature what appear to be "scabs," resembling human faces or unknown life forms, on small white canvases. Yoshida refers to these as "scabs." The soft translucency of the overlapping vibrant watercolor paints reveals a kind of brightness, which seems to unconsciously guide Yoshida's hand as she accepts her inner conflict and persistently paints beyond it. It is as if the act of painting is an integral part of herself, her rediscovered starting point, and the beginning of her journey. This process appears to be a source of healing for Yoshida.

This body of work represents the process everyone experiences in life: getting injured, forming a "scab," and then healing. This exhibition also includes new works from the "Future Behind" series that Yoshida revisited after a break of approximately a year and a half. These pieces display an array of individuals across the canvas, exuding a strong and overwhelming presence. In contrast to her drawings, these works in gouache exhibit Yoshida's unique texture, appearing delicate yet powerful, and they depict figures that stand firmly despite their fragile and fleeting existence. The exhibition will showcase the new pieces in addition to the works produced in 2021: "Future Behind #2-#6."

Furthermore, at this exhibition, Yoshida's art book "Closer Than Voice," featuring the essay that inspired the exhibition title, "Sometimes Scabs Peel Off" (published in the 2020 issue of "Gendai" by Kodansha), will also be available for purchase.
