Artists

Shiro Shirahata
Mountain photographer Shiro Shirahata (1993-2019), whose father was from the former town of Yawata (now Sakata City), called Mount Chokai "my father's mountain" and took many photographs during his many visits.

In 1951, he studied under Fuji photographer Koyo Okada, learning many techniques, including camera operation, expression, and photo development. Later, in 1962, he declared his independence as a "photographer who only takes pictures of mountains," and continued to challenge the world's and Japan's famous peaks in pursuit of his own personal "mountains of the heart."

This exhibition, the first retrospective of his work since his death, will present a comprehensive overview of Shirahata's art, including his stage photographs of ballet in his early years, photographs of the world's famous peaks such as the European Alps and the Himalayas, famous Japanese mountains such as the Southern Alps, Mount Fuji, and Mount Chokai, as well as Oze and alpine flora.
