Shotaro Sanada
Street Dreams Studios Tokyo will be hosting artist Shotaro Sanada's Solo Exhibition "Over" from March 23, 2024.

In addition to producing large-scale paintings that aim to create "new landscapes" that incorporate spatiality, Shotaro Sanada is also engaged in research of aesthetics and science that explore the roots of creativity by applying artificial intelligence to plastic arts. After graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts, he entered the master's program at the University of Tokyo Graduate School in April this year. Since he was a student, he has presented many solo exhibitions, was selected as the first artist of Google Japan × Generation Z Artist, has been nominated by JR East to have a 10m large mural on a semi-permanent display at Nagano Station, and has exhibited his work all over the country. He is a Japanese painter who represents Gen Z.

For his solo exhibition “Over”, all works are made from “Kiso Hinoki'' in cooperation with Katsuno Mokuzai. Kiso Hinoki is synonymous with high-quality wood that continues to capture the hearts of Japanese people, and it has excellent durability, earthquake resistance, health benefits, and antiseptic effects, as well as comforting properties such as fragrance, warmth, and texture. In particular, Kiso Hinoki, which has been grown over many years in the harsh climate of the Kiso Valley overlooking Mt.Ontake, has been prized as a construction material for shrines and temples, including Ise Grand Shrine. Celebrating their 60th anniversary, Katsuno Mokuzai is taking on the challenge of realizing a society where people and forests coexist through sustainable forest management in the Kiso Valley.

In this exhibition, Mr. Sanada focuses on the feeling of being "alive," and the tree rings carved into the trunks of the Kiso Hinoki serve as trajectories that prove the passage of time, while at the same time dynamically visualizing the workings of life. It is a drawn line that expresses how the landscape that emerges when it becomes a cross-section of life that gives a sense of history appears in the present day.

Approximately 20 new artwork will be exhibited, and throughout the exhibition period, live paintings will be hosted, bringing over 100 kg of Kiso Hinoki stumps to the gallery.
